Great Migrations Lecture

Great migrations have been part of human existence since people thought they could have a better life if they moved elsewhere.  In today’s world, with technology and so many choices for traveling and transportation modes, human beings are still on the move.

Current scholarship says the first significant human migrations began about 1.8 million years ago when populations moved out of Africa.  They spread across large landmasses, reaching Southeast Asia.  That is the earliest known movement of people who left the African continent.  Other populations began migrating out of Africa later, between 70,000 and 100,000 years ago.  We don’t know why those people decided to leave their homelands.  Perhaps they moved because of bad weather, or they were searching for better food.   Whatever their reasons for moving, they eventually reached Australia and the Americas around 15,000 to 20,000 years ago.

The Cro-Magnon, the presumed first modern European humans, entered the land mass Eurasia by the Zagros Mountains near Iran.  It is believed they began their move about 50,000 years ago.  One group settled in the coastal areas around the Indian Ocean and another group headed north to Central Asia.

There have been other significant migrations throughout the Middle East.  Arab peoples migrated to North Africa in the eleventh century.  That migration greatly impacted Africa’s demographics and culture.  There have been many migrations or displacements of peoples for many different reasons:  greener pastures for livestock, better food and water, safer environments, climate changes, religious upheavals, and the many wars over the ages.

Another great migration, which should be mentioned, is the movement of Black Americans from the rural South to urban areas in the North, Midwest, and West in the United States between 1910 and 1970.  It was the largest internal migration in US history.  Approximately six million Black people from the American South made their way to the North.  The causes of this migration are well-known.  Black Americans fled from racial violence to get better economic opportunities and better educational opportunities.

Throughout history, various populations of people, including nomadic tribes, have migrated to other places.  Every region that has become populated with “outsiders” has been impacted by those who have moved in, especially when there are large groups of people who settle permanently.  As you study the many different cultures of people and their movements across landscapes, you see that diversity is not based solely on appearances.  Every great migration impacts and changes cultural dynamics. This is a challenge in our modern world, which we must learn to resolve peacefully without wars.
