Golden Temple

The Golden Temple has a creation story. Creation stories are preserved and passed on in all cultures. A recent discovery is proof to this fact. The Golden Temple gets its golden name from the trillion dollar treasure found inside. It was dedicated centuries ago to Lord Vishnu; but there still remains much mystery and much speculation. The new discovery should help anthropologists answer many questions.  A few of these questions are listed here.

Are tribal cultures in Kerala tied to the temple’s original construction? How long ago was it built?  References to this temple are found in ancient scripts, but it is unknown to most of the world. The historic temple is mentioned in Hindu texts from 500 BC to 300 AD, but some scholars say it is as old as 5,000 years. The temple, described as, “having walls of pure gold,” has an original idol, Sree Padmanabhaswamy, but its presence is not well understood. Another puzzle has to do with the references to salted mangos associated with the temple.  These sound like simple questions; but the answers can shed new light on the culture that created the temple.  Answers also add to the understanding of the deities worshiped in the temple.
