tituli – the plural of titulus – meaning “inscription” or “label” – a latin word, but used in English as well.  Tituli is a means of conferring a label, inscription, or caption in order to clarify names of persons, figures, or subjects in Medieval art.  Examples of tituli are found on the famous Bayeux Tapestry, on ancient buildings, such as the Pantheon in Rome, or at the top of a cross at a crucifixion.
