Nutrition and Culture

Nutrition and Culture is a huge topic in the media today.  However, the information from the media is not always correct.  You should gain credible knowledge about nutrition, ideology and culture to be able to make the right choices for your health and everyday lifestyle.

If nutritional content in food were as much of a driving force as cultural content within our choices of food, populations all over the world would be healthier and less prone to contract infectious diseases and less prone to get diseases that are preventable through proper nutrition.  However, as the lessons in this course reflect, eating is about many more things than just nutrition.

Nutrition is becoming more of a concern now that people are getting older, and are dying from self-inflicted diseases, like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, which might be prevented by a proper food regiment (diet).  Many times the information out there is simply a fad or a trend that sounds good in theory, but in reality, does not work.  Some non-nutrient foods may “work” when you are young, but not as we age.

The following short video, by Professor Georgia Jones, suggests changes that people can make in their diets, nutritionally, that will result in a healthier lifestyle and better health overall.  We will be covering such changes in more detail during the four lessons in this course.

You can learn about, and understand better, how the process of consuming food is much more about culture and cultural food habits established early in life, than about nutrition.
