Most people think of contemporary art as being “contemporary,” or in the present. However, there have been contemporary artists ahead of their time—so to speak.  One that comes to mind is Pablo Picasso, who painted in the early 20th century. How was he a contemporary artist?

Contemporary art is supposed to be a “movement” which belongs to the present.  Some say contemporary art’s genre came into existence after WWII ended, but we must ask, What makes a contemporary artist? That is what this course is about. Contemporary art is innovative and different from other art forms.  It is important to understand how and why contemporary art is not the same as esthetic art.  (See also Art in Culture course.)

Artists around the world reflect a more open mind through their artworks and art expressions. Contemporary art explores new ideas and technologies, pushing boundaries and experimenting with new mediums and new ways of portraying culture and cultural perspectives. Contemporary artists provide societies with a unique lens to see the world.

Contemporary art encourages us to think critically about the many and sometimes unknown issues that shape the contemporary world we live in.
